How did you discover the music of Robert Cray?

My first experience was the transmission of the Seville Guitar festivals, in the last 80’s/early nineties, and was totally blown away by the live version of ‘Phone Booth’ and ‘The Dream’.

I was so blown away by his what I think is quite a percussive guitar technique, and also inspired me to buy a US Std strat in a very similar colour to his signature Strat (could not afford the signature one :( ).  Even have my trem blocked off!

Anyway, after seeing that, my journey started with ‘Strong Persuader’ and I have not looked back since.  Saw the guys live in UK Shepperds Bush for ‘Rainy Morning’ tour!

Cheers, Mark.

I have to thank my friend Russell for turning me on to Robert. I was 20yrs. old when I first heard him for the first time. He said,“If you like Stevie Ray than you’re gonna love this guy.” He was right. In 1986 we got to see him warm up for Eric Clapton @ Madison Square Garden. I was blown away by the Cray Band so much that we drove upstate the next night to see him again, by himself. I haven’t looked back since. I just saw my 30th Cray show over the summer and I’m ready for the spring tour. Robert is a must see artist who has the most amazing stage presence. The music speaks for itself, so just go see him. NOW!!

Loved the Strong Persuader album which came out when I was attending High School. Started digging into Robert Cray’s previous work and bought all his music from then on. All his tracks are on my Ipod and invariably that is what is playing in my house in random format. From those tiny beginnings my favorite kind of music became the Blues. First concert attended was in Cambridge (UK) about 6 years ago, have not missed one since.  Love it!!!!

It was the summer of 1988 at the Del Mar Fair in San Diego. He had to have been touring on “Don’t be afraid of the dark”.
Robert’s singing and guitar playing, along with Stevie Ray and Clapton made a high school teenager want to be a blues player. Heavy Metal was the norm but not for me, what Robert and the other guys were playing was coming from somewhere different and much more real.

After 20 plus years, still a big fan and looking forward to years of great music from Robert. I’ve seen about ten shows mostly in the L.A. area.  All of his band line-ups have been awesome, Jim Pugh - what can you say - “phenomenal” and man it’s good to see Richard Cousins back. I do miss the horns, hopefully they’ll make their way back in too.

Il y a cinq ans, je suis allé à un concert d’Eric Clapton à Paris Bercy et j’ai découvert Robert Cray en première partie.
Un moment unique et superbe.
Merci Robert.

Hi Everyone

I first got into Robert’s music in the mid 80’s when I was about sixteen, working in a petrol station and I collected enough voucher stamps to redeem his “Strong Persuader” album, which I played pretty much till the cassette got worn out, simply loved his voice and guitar playing, especially on the track “New Blood”.

I’ve recently co-written a song in tribute to the great man himself called “Ain’t Talkin’ Bout Chicago” which I will post to my SoundClick and Myspace pages when its completed if you’d like to check it out (I’ll post a message here when it is uploaded) and I also hope to see him for the first time in Dublin on the 22nd of July next, really looking forward to it!

G’Day from Australia.

I was in a record store around the late 80’s when i heard “Smokin’ Gun” for the first time. The song grabbed me straight away so i had to hear more from this band i was listening to. All the tracks sounded great so i bought the album.

The next one i purchased was “Midnight Stroll”. The thing that really got me was how well the music was produced. Not only the great man himself sounding brilliant, but the tone and power of the drums, in particular the bass and snare drums. The sound of the horns too was totally awesome and blew me away. I’m a huge fan of Rock/Blues with horns.

My favourite group is Huey Lewis and the News and it came as no surprise to me when i bought their Live at 25 DVD where there was a slide show at the end with all these ticket stubbs and posters of them playing with Robert Cray at various venues. What a double act i wish i was in America to see. If it was tag-team wrestling, no doubt they would be the heavyweight champions of the world!!

I was always into all kinds of music.  Believe it or not via Southern rock .  As a kid I loved to listen to Marshall Tucker , Skynyrd, Allmans.  I appreciated Duanne Allman’s Stuff as well as Dickey Bett’s , it was rock but there was a sound in there I liked.  I discovered Stevie Ray and it opened my ears to the Blues.  I became addicted to learning about and hearing the Blues.

I found Robert to be singing about alot of the mistakes , heartaches ( some caused by me ) and it was unique .  I have been a fan now for over 20 years.

It was the late 1980’s and I had always enjoyed Robert Cray songs like Smokin Gun on the radio and I had bought the CD Strong Persuader and enjoyed it on what I will describe as a superficial level, but the night I truly became a Robert Cray fan was when I arrived home and found that my now ex wife had packed up and left me. All she left me was a couch, stereo system and a coffee table. I must say I was dazed confused and relieved all at the same time. I settled in by making a couple of vodka martinis and listening to my only worldly possession the stereo which included my only CD Strong Persuader, so I sat there on my couch with my martini buzz, but for the first time I really listened to the words and felt the guitar. It was profound how that album resonated with all the feeling I was having at the time. From that point on I have been a huge Robert Cray fan. All of his music speaks to me and in the 20 plus years since, I have realized that Robert Cray has basically written the soundtrack to my live. I have been to many of his concerts all over the country and every time I go it still takes me back to that night 20 plus years ago where I learned to appreciate what a great musician he is.
